“Africa in America” Day Trip to San Basilio de Palenque
This day trip brings you to San Basilio de Palenque (UNESCO World Heritage), known as the first town free of Slavery in the Americas.
This village is definitely worth a visit in order to gain a fuller picture of Cartagena, the slaves history in Colombia and Latin America and to observe a community where Afro-roots and traditions have been preserved and maintained including a distinct creole language (Palenquero), folkloric dance, cuisine, dress, hairstyles, political organization and social structure.
Benkos Bioho established the community of San Basilio when he escaped from a life of slavery in the 16th century. He was born into a royal family that ruled islands just off the coast of Guinea-Bissau but was captured by a Portuguese slave trader and transported to Colombia where he was enslaved. His story is only one among the many similar stories that you will hear from the locals, and which explain why Colombia has such a rich African influence.
In order to get to this village, you will need a one-hour drive to the south of Cartagena. You will enjoy looking some of the Barrios of Cartagena and the countryside. The tour promises you an interesting, fun and educational day. Simply perfect for African legacy lovers.
